Don’t know if you’ve been under a Twitter rock, but Google+ just kicked it aside to be the No. 2 biggest social boulder on the block. Since Google’s release of their social network they’ve made huge strides. With over half a billion users, it’s climbing towards the behemoth that’s Facebook.
You’ve probably seen profile pictures showing up beneath search results. Recently, it has gained traction as the network grows and more users share content. Currently, my profile pic is showing up when any of River City Internet Marketing’s site pages are returned as a search result.
Eric Schmidt, former CEO and now Executive Chairman for Google, was recently talking about his new book when he stated, “Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification.”
Hint Hint! The importance of having your brand logo or author profile pic in the search results is, “to be a result or to not be a result.” That’s the question!
These “verified online profiles” are called “authorship”. Authorship serves the purpose of distinguishing which social profiles on the internet come from real life people not the Wizard of Web Oz hidden behind the curtain, thousands of miles away.
It dubs you as the source of the information contained in blog posts and articles. Rel=author is a link attribute introduced more than a year ago in the new HTML5 web standards. It’s now tied to google profiles and more specifically, Google+ profiles.
The video below was posted more than a year ago. It describes the authorship attribute and subtly mentions it becoming a metric to rank websites. Check around the 0:48 mark.
Now if we look at the report and the video published by Matt Cutts and the webmaster team, we find this is an important factor to consider when choosing how to leverage your time optimizing your site.
Search is all about serving the most relevant answer to your searches and queries. By being able to verify the authenticity of the person/brand behind the information, it can further prove that the information is legitimate and helpful. Like the early days of video site maps and marketing, having a picture of you visible in the search results grabs the searcher by the eye sockets and focuses them on your search listing. That’s what you’re looking for right?
So the question I’m sure you’re asking is,”How do I do this?”
Well first thing is to create a google+ profile for each member of your team that contributes to your company’s blog. Since most have a gmail account you can use the pre-existing one. Or if you or your employees would rather separate business from personal, you can always create new accounts using company email addresses.
Next, use WordPress user profiles to tie each contributor’s posts to Google+. I choose WordPress because it’s what we advise all of our clients to use. It’s ease of use to the non-savvy web users helps increase the chances businesses will use it and lowers the barrier to entry by removing the web design company from doing the work to style and post articles for you.
If you use Joomla, Magento or another CMS it’s not too difficult. Other web languages should fair rather easy to implement too. Just talk to your webmaster or web team to get this added to the pages you post helpful articles and information by adding the rel=author link attribute to the header of the page. Make sure the link points to the google+ profile of the correct author.
Eric Schmidt further explains its importance by saying,”…it will result in more users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.”
Being a B2B business, it’s all about relationships. This introduces me to prospects and brings me closer to the people that want help marketing their websites.
I’ve never been one to make my daily routine searching the social spheres, but Google+ is one I utilize. I share helpful how-to articles, awesome pictures and funny videos that allow you to escape and have a good laugh.
Sounds like my time’s been well spent using Google+. So can yours. Add the rel=author attribute to your site and don’t forget to add Google+ to your list of social sites to share your information with.
If you’re looking for a great way to build authority and get your site seen in the results, your Google+ profile can be the Golden Ticket. No longer should you hide from the topics you know and love on the web. It could be the boost you need to find more leads and sales.
